|we lose our power...alot. 3-4 times a YEAR. and each time it's not just hours, but typically DAYS. the most recent outage was last month and lasted for 4 days - it was royal pain in the ass, and we lost everything in our fridge...so it was expensive, too. detroit edison doesnt really give a shit, so we've taken matters into our own hands.
over the winter we picked up a generator and last month i picked up a power transfer switch. this nifty device allows us to selectively power a half-dozen circuits WITHOUT having to string extension cords here and there. once wired in, we flip a few switches and those circuits are "off the grid" and powered exclusively by our generator.
