2004 Chromed Forks

this is the photographic record of having 2 steel forks chromed @ a local shop. in my limited experience, the price/quality ratio cannot be matched. the cost was $45/fork to strip, prep, and chrome each fork + and additional $5 per fork for an EPA hazardous waste disposal fee. turnaround was ~2 weeks.

both forks started out being painted. the ciöcc fork was 20 years old and in generally ok condition, but definitely worn with normal nicks, dings, and general wear-and-tear from use. the colnago fork was only few years old and essentially in as-new condition.

as you can see from the pics, the mirror-like finish is really tremendous. i did notice that the prep-work done on the inner-sides of the fork-blades (that faces the wheel) wasnt quite as good as the exposed outer 3 sides, but you really have got your eyes within a couple inches to notice and the difference is very subtle.

i also noticed that there seemed to be some rough-texture in the various engravings/stampings on the crowns - mainly the lettering on the ciöcc. i'm not sure if that's a result of the original (poor) quality-control of the ciöcc, or a remnant of the prep/chrome process. in any event, i'll be filling those in with paint so it's not a big deal. i suspect you can request that the engravings be cleaned and finished to whatever extent you like - for a cost.

since i'm also a watch enthusiast, here's a pic of the watch i was wearing at the time - a custom hommage to a vietnam-era military issue dive watch - mechanical/automatic, of course!
